Decision to withdraw Gandhis' SPG cover apolitical: Govt counters Congress in RS

The Modi government on Wednesday informed the Parliament that there was nothing 'political' in withdrawing the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover for the Gandhi family and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"There is nothing political, security hasn't been withdrawn. Home Ministry has a very set pattern & there is a protocol. It is not done by a politician, it is done by Home Ministry and according to threat perception the security is given & withdrawn", BJP's JP Nadda said in the Rajya Sabha.

Nadda was countering Congress leader Anand Sharma who raked up the issue in the upper house of the Parliament.

Raising the issue in the upper house, Sharma said the cover should be "restored" going beyond "partisan politics."

The party has been raising the issue in both the Houses.

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy too said that the threat surrounding the Gandhi family disappeared with the end of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who were responsible for the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on 21 May 1991.

"The second this is the attitude of the protectees towards those accused of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. They have been asking for a reduction in the punishment", he said.

The SPG security cover given to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was withdrawn last week by the central government after a security review.

Their security detail was replaced with 'Z plus' security cover of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on Tuesday gave an adjournment motion notice in the House on the Home Ministry's move to remove the special protection from the Gandhi family.

Chowdhury and DMK leader TR Baalu later sought to raise the issue during zero-Hour but Speaker Om Birla did not let them speak on the issue saying the issue was already raised by them.

Yesterday, Congress members protested in Lok Sabha and came near the Speaker's podium during question hour.
