The Supreme Court on Tuesday proposed mediation to arrive at an amicable resolution to the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.
“Even if there's 1% chance of amicable resolution, it should be given a try. This should be concurrent to the suit pending before the court. We are seriously considering this. This will be a confidential process,” the court said.
A five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer was hearing the matter.
Fourteen appeals have been filed in the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya be partitioned equally among the three parties -- the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
