Chaos broke out at Bharatiya Janata Party's press conference at its headquarters in Delhi on Thursday. A man hurled a shoe at BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao who was addressing the press. Television visuals showed the shoe missed the BJP leader by inches.
Meanwhile, the man who hurled the shoe has been detained. The suspect was immediately overpowered and taken out of the media room. The press conference was then suspended.
When the shoe was hurled, the BJP spokesperson was briefing the media about Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur’s candidature from Bhopal constituency and was slamming the Congress party for defaming Hindus.
Rao described the shoe-hurling incident as a "condemnable act" allegedly carried out by a "Congress-inspired" person.
"This is yet another attempt by a Congress inspired person who comes in here to show the same kind of mentality. We won't get deterred by these criminal elements in society. We condemn this action," said Rao.
BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav was also sitting alongside when the shoe was hurled at Rao.
The incident happened on a day when voting is being held in the second phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019. A total of 95 parliamentary constituencies have gone to vote in 11 states and one Union Territory today.
Lok Sabha Elections are being held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, with votes slated to be counted on May 23.
