Its been 11 years since Virat Kohli made his international debut and the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) has decided to name a stand at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium after the Indian skipper. With the honour, Kohli becomes the youngest active cricketer to get a stand named after him. The ‘Virat Kohli’ stand will be officially inaugurated on September 12 in a ceremony scheduled at the Weightlifting Auditorium of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. On this day 11 years ago a young Virat Kohli made his international debut for India against Sri Lanka at Dambulla, and the move comes as a perfect tribute for the swashbuckling Indian batsman and his achievements in the field of cricket.
DDCA will even felicitate the Indian cricket team and the ceremony will be attended in person by Home Minister Amit Shah as chief guest. The function will also see Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju as the guest of honour.
Feroz Shah Kotla has stands named after former Indian cricketers Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohinder Amarnath while the likes of Virender Sehwag and Anjum Chopra has gates named after them. The Feroz Shah Kotla’s Hall of Fame has been named after former Indian skipper Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
"Virat Kohli’s outstanding contribution to world cricket has done DDCA proud. We are happy to honour him for achieving certain milestones and unbeatable captaincy record,” Rajat Sharma, president of DDCA, said.
"Feroz Shah Kotla would be equally proud because Virat played here as a teenager before joining the other legends in the Hall of Fame. To cherish these memories, DDCA wanted to dedicate a stand in his name. I’m sure the ‘Virat Kohli Stand’ will be a source of inspiration for Delhi’s young cricketers.
"We are also delighted that Team India is not only led by a Delhi player but it also has an opening batsman (Shikhar Dhawan), a wicket-keeper (Rishabh Pant) and a lead bowler (Ishant Sharma). It’s a matter of pride for DDCA to felicitate the entire national cricket team and coach Ravi Shastri at a spectacular function in Delhi."
Earlier, Kohli became the first-ever cricketer to amass over 20,000 international runs in a decade. Kohli's geniuses on the field are known to all and the 30-year-old has broken almost all the records that have come his way. The swashbuckling batter has also won hearts off-the-field while achieving over 30 million followers on each social media platform (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) on his way to becoming the most followed cricket star.
