Trends hinted towards a possible hung Assembly in Haryana. Initial trends showed that the BJP was leading on 38 seats followed by Congress on 27, newly-formed Jananayak Janata Party (JJP) on 11, INLD on two and others on seven seats. Political manoeuvres gathered momentum in the state as JJP expressed confidence of playing a key role in government formation. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is all set to meet party chief and Home Minister Amit Shah later during the day.
Commenting on the early trends, Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed confidence that Congress will form a government in the state. Taking a jibe at BJP's 'Mission 75', JJP leader Dushyant Chautala said that they (BJP) will fall short of their target. Chautala also predicted that no party will be in a position to form a government in the state and claimed that 'the key to form a government' will be with the JJP.
"People of Haryana want change," he told reporters, adding, "Haryana ki janta ka pyar mil raha hai. Badlaav ki nishaani hai. 75 paar toh fail hogaya (for BJP), ab Yamuna paar karne ki baari hai."
“Congress will get a majority," Hooda said. In the 90-seater Haryana Assembly, the winning party needs a minimum tally of 46 seats to be able to form a government. If the BJP or the Congress falls short of the desired numbers — a possibility early trends have been pointing towards — the JJP or independents will hold the power to decide a future course of action towards government formation.
The JJP has already made it clear that it will support the party which gives it a CM position. On being questioned about reports that Congress was willing to offer CM position to his party, Chautala said, "I have not had any discussions with anyone. A decision will be taken only after the final numbers are out."
