Unprecedented 'revolt' hits Delhi Police over clashes with lawyers: Top developments

In an unprecedented revolt by Delhi Police personnel, hundreds of policemen in uniforms and plainclothes gathered outside Delhi Police Headquarters at ITO protesting against the alleged vandalism against them by lawyers at the Tis Hazari Court on November 2. On Tuesday morning, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik appealed to protesting policemen to end their stir; however, the policemen have demanded stern action against the lawyers.
Why are Delhi Police protesting? Here's a quick timeline of the case so far

*On November 2, an argument broke out between a policeman belonging to Delhi Police's 3rd Battalion and an advocate outside the inmates' lock-up. The argument spiralled into violence and a group of advocates reportedly assaulted police officers. 20 policemen were injured and police vehicles were burnt.

*Another altercation took place on Monday when a policeman was assaulted by a group of lawyers. In a video being investigated by the police, a bike-born policeman is seen being attacked by a group of lawyers. The video shows a cop being attacked by a lawyer with his elbow. Later, he also hurls a helmet towards the policeman. Shortly afterwards, a group of lawyers also gathered outside Gate 3 of Tis Hazari Court.

*Six cases have been registered since the November 2 clash — two have been filed by advocates, one by a judge and one by a police constable. Two advocates registered cases against policemen on Sunday on charges of assault and attempt to murder.

*On Tuesday, Patnaik appealed to protesting police to maintain peace. “I appeal to all to maintain peace. These are trying times for us. We need to fulfill the responsibility of maintaining and assuring law and order... We have to behave like a disciplined force. The government and the people expect us to uphold the law, it is our big responsibility. I urge you to resume duty," he said.

*Police have demanded action against the culprits and displayed placards reading — 'Humara CP (Commissioner of Police) kaisa ho, Kiran Bedi jaisa ho'. The unprecedented protests come months ahead of elections in Delhi. It may also be noted that the Delhi Police is under the control of the Central government, a reporting structure that has been the bone of contention between the Centre and the state.
