Government Issues Warning Over Rise In River Water Level In Gujarat, Maharashtra

Cyclone Ockhi, which claimed around 37 lives in coastal Kerala and over six lives in districts of Tamil Nadu, will make its landfall near Surat and the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat as a deep depression early on Wednesday. “Heavy rainfall might occur in Valsad, Surat, Navsari, Bharuch, Dang, Tapi, Amreli, Gir-Somnath and Bhavnagar districts on December 5,” the IMD said.

Cyclone Ockhi which held the “very severe” cyclone status has weakened into a “severe” cyclone, the met office has said.

Maharashtra will witness moderate-to-heavy rainfall at a few places ‘along with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph’ at a few places over north Konkan including Mumbai, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, where the government has declared a precautionary holiday for schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Sindhudurga, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts.

In Kerala, so far, over 690 fishermen have been rescued from the sea. The financial toll from the cyclone has been pegged at Rs 17.28 crore so far. In Tamil Nadu, around 70 fishermen are yet to be rescued even as the death toll is still in single digits. Cyclone Ockhi has also left the Lakshadweep islands devastated.
