Mexico goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera secures Pumas move

Mexico City, Mexico international goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera has ended his 11-year spell with Toluca to join their Liga MX rivals Pumas.

The 37-year-old thanked his former club in a heartfelt message on social media on Wednesday, without providing details of the new contract, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Today I want to thank Toluca for the 11 years I wore these colours, for being part of the club's history," he tweeted.

"Now I have to close this cycle and open a new one full of enthusiasm and with all the commitment and unconditional loyalty to my new club," he added.

Talavera, who has been capped 28 times for Mexico's national team, began his professional career at Guadalajara in 2003 and spent a brief period at UANL before joining Toluca in 2009.

He made 359 league appearances for the latter, establishing himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Liga MX.

The Liga MX Clausura season was cancelled in May, two months after football was suspended in Mexico because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Liga MX officials announced last month that the Apertura tournament would begin on July 24, with matches to be played without fans until further notice.
