Over 100 missiles rocked the Syrian capital of Damascus and surrounding areas on Saturday as Western forces launched a coordinated and targeted attack on the country. In the biggest intervention against the Bashar al-Assad regime till date, the United States, Britain and France struck military targets and alleged chemical weapons sites.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the military action from the White House, saying the three allies had "marshaled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality."
The United States, Britain and France have all bombed Islamic State fighters in Syria for years and had troops on the ground to fight them, but refrained from targetting Assad's government apart from a volley of U.S. missiles last year. But things have changed now with the recent poison gas attack in the eastern Ghouta town of Douma on April 7, where atleast people lost their lives.
French Defence Minister Florence Parly said the Russians "were warned beforehand" to avoid any conflict.Trump has now tweeted:
A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!
Russia had not issued any statement so far.
