Jammu and Kashmir governor Vohra calls all party meeting

Jammu and Kashmir governor Vohra calls all party meeting

Jammu and Kashmir governor Narendra Nath Vohra is meeting the top leaders of nine mainstream political parties on Friday evening to discuss the current political and security situation in the state.

The meeting, first with politicians after governor’s rule was imposed in the state, will be held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) around 4:30pm.

Officials said that all the mainstream political parties who have been invited have consented to attend the meeting. The PDP will either be represented by former chief minister and party president Mehbooba Mufi, or vice-president Sartaj Madni.

The BJP is being represented by its former president, Sat Sharma, as the state unit president Ravinder Sharma is set to meet party chief Amit Shah in Jammu, according to BJP spokesman, Altaf Thakur.

The Congress is being represented by its state president, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, who welcomed the move, saying, “This is good thing that governor has called us to hear our views.”

National Confere (NC) sources said its vice-president Omar Abdullah was representing the party. Abdullah had met Governor on Wednesday soon after the state came under Governor’s rule. However, he has demanded dissolution of the state assembly and holding of elections and raised apprehensions about horse trading especially after the assembly was put in suspended animation.

Sources said the governor will be seeking the support of leaders to keep the situation in the state under control and for the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra.

Vohra has already chaired several meetings in the past two days, including with top police and army officials.

Although his term is coming to an end this month, there is every possibility that he will get extension for a few months considering the present situation, according to sources.

Vohra has been the governor of the state since 2008 and this is the fourth time that the state has come under governor’s rule under him.
