'If you can’t fill up vacancies, we will take over the task': SC pulls up High Courts over hiring of judges

The Supreme Court on Thursday pulled-up High Courts over the issue of appointment in higher judiciary while hearing a case relating to filling up of vacancies in judiciary across the country.

The apex court pulled up Delhi High Court for the delay in completing the recruitment process of 200 judges in the courts and asked what’s this laid-back attitude is.

The court also slammed Punjab and Haryana High Court for not taking adequate steps to fill the vacancies.

Stating that all the states are under its gaze, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, "If you can’t fill up the vacancies, we will take over that task from you and we will make it a centralized process.”

Over a week ago, passing a suo motu order on the huge number of vacancies in the subordinate judiciary across the country, the top court had sought the response from the High Courts/State governments.
