Aamir Khan on Thugs of Hindostan Failure: Feeling Bad We Couldn't Entertain the Audience

Aamir Khan-starrer Thugs of Hindostan failed to draw cinegoers and fell short of expectations. The film, which was touted as the biggest Hindi movie of the year, has limped its way to the Rs 150 cr mark in India collection alone. Panned severely by critics and audiences alike for its formulaic story, bogged-down performances and ancient storytelling, the film is struggling big time on the box office.

Aamir on Monday acknowledged the failure of the film, saying he feels “very bad” that he could not entertain the audience this time. The actor said that he takes the complete responsibility for disappointing the cinegoers.

“I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure that we tried our level best. There are people who have liked the film a lot and we would like to thank them. We are happy that they liked the film but that’s a minority. Majority of the people did not like the film and we are aware of the fact. So there is no doubt that we did go wrong. I want to apologise to the viewers who came to watch my film in the theatres as I was not able to entertain them despite trying my best. But those who came with so many expectations did not enjoy the film and I am feeling very bad about it," Aamir said at the award ceremony of India’s Storytellers Script Contest.

Made at an estimated budget of over Rs 250 crore, even an A-list ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir and Katrina Kaif, couldn’t save the film.

Thugs of Hindostan recorded the highest opening ever at the Indian box office, raking in an estimated Rs 50 crore on Day one. YRF multi-starrer film recorded the highest pre-sales of all time for a Hindi film. It stands at No. 3 after Baahubali –The Conclusion and Avengers - Infinity War when compared with the advance-sales of all language films.
