Sarkar becomes sixth south Indian film to gross Rs 250 cr worldwide

Thalapathy Vijay's Sarkar has become the sixth film from south Indian cinema to gross Rs 250 Cr from worldwide theatrical earnings.

Vijay has become the only Tamil actor with consecutive Rs 250 Cr worldwide grossers with Mersal in 2017 and now Sarkar. The other movies in the Rs 250 Cr club from south India are Superstar Rajinikanth's 2010 release Enthiran, 2016 gangster-drama Kabali, Prabhas' Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. Now, Prabhas, Vijay and Rajinikanth have two films each in the Rs 250 Cr club.

With the release of 2.0 just a day away, Rajinikanth is all set to become the only and the first actor from the south Indian film industry to score three Rs 250 Cr worldwide grossers ever. Trade pundits estimate 2.0 to amass the aforementioned cumulative target in just two or three days, making it the fastest movie ever to attain the feat.

Meanwhile, Sarkar has set a handful of admirable benchmarks in home ground Tamil Nadu. Vijay has become the only hero from Tamil cinema to score two Rs 125 Cr grossers in the state, that too consecutively with Mersal and Sarkar. The film has already emerged profitable in a handful of territories in the state, although a few regions will suffer a very minimal loss of around 5-7% for distributors. Chennai, Chengalpet, and Coimbatore - the 3Cs which contribute the lion's share of the Tamil Nadu theatrical revenue vaulted over the break-even point successfully.

The 3Cs have been instrumental in the film's record figures in TN, and have contributed nearly 50% of the total theatrical earnings from the state. Sarkar has only two days left to finish its theatrical run in almost all areas in TN before 2.0 takes over the screens. While Mersal's lifetime cumulative total in TN stood at a whopping Rs 128.5 Cr, Sarkar is currently at the Rs 125 Cr mark with a fantastic theatrical share of Rs 71.5 Cr, and it is going to be a challenging target to supplant the earnings of Atlee-directed film since 2.0 will land on 29 November.

In Chennai city, Sarkar has pulled in Rs 14.54 Cr in 20 days, becoming the second highest-grossing film of all-time in the city after SS Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Conclusion. While the movie has ended up as a loss venture in Kerala, it's become profitable for stakeholders in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Karnataka. Among the offshore regions, the UAE-GCC has emerged as the highest-grossing overseas performer with a peachy total of $2.52 million (Rs 17.8 Cr).

In Malaysia, Sarkar ($2.05 million; Rs 14.5 Cr) is now the fourth biggest Tamil grosser after Kabali, Mersal, and Enthiran. The AR Murugadoss-directed social drama has also dethroned director Shankar and Chiyaan Vikram's I to become the sixth highest-grossing south Indian film.
