Rajinikanth's 2.0 becomes highest grosser of 2018 with Rs 600 cr worldwide, surpassing Sanju, Padmaavat

Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar-starrer, sci-fi epic 2.0, directed by Shankar, has sailed over the Rs 600 crore mark worldwide in less than two weeks of its theatrical run. The film, which released worldwide on 29 November, has become the highest grossing Indian film of 2018, by dethroning popular Bollywood blockbusters such as Sanju and Padmaavat to attain the feat.

Currently, 2.0 is the eighth highest grossing Indian film globally, only behind such titles as Dangal, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Baahubali: The Beginning and Sultan. It is the third south Indian film after the Baahubali series to enter the all time highest grossing Indian films, which is dominated by Bollywood titles.

The Hindi version of 2.0 has registered the best numbers in India, contributing close to 40 percent of the running domestic total. The film has collected Rs 166.75 crore net from 11 days in the North and is also the top grossing movie of 2018 in the domestic market, besting the totals of other Bollywood hits such as Sanju, Padmaavat and Race 3 in cumulative all India takings. If you just take into account the Hindi version net of Rs 166.75 crore, 2.0 is the third best performing film of 2018 behind Sanju and Padmaavat. It has surpassed other Hindi hits of the year such as Race 3, Baaghi 2, Stree and Raazi to name a few.

With a whopping domestic total of Rs 450 crore, 2.0 is also the fourth highest Indian grosser of all time, only behind the mega blockbusters such as Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Baahubali: The Beginning and Dangal. According to trade pundits, 2.0 has the potential to break into the Rs 200 crore net in the North at the end of its full run. But two big releases in Shah Rukh Khan's Zero and the Hindi dubbed version of Kannada film KGF will eat into its screen share from 21 December.

In Tamil Nadu, the Lyca-produced magnum opus is on the verge of breaching the Rs 100 crore mark in theatrical revenue. With 2.0, Rajinikanth has equaled Vijay's record (Sarkar and Mersal) of two Rs 100 crore grossers in the state, including his 2010 super hit Enthiran. It must be noted that the lifetime total of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Rs 148.5 crore, in Tamil Nadu remains unbeaten as of now.

Chennai is the best performing territory for 2.0 in Tamil Nadu, with more than 20 percent of the revenue coming from the region. In 12 days, the film has pulled in a peachy total of Rs 19.03 crore,  dethroning the record of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Rs 18.85 crore, to become the highest earning movie of all time in the city. In Nizam, the share of 2.0 is nearing the Rs 40 crore mark and is all set to become the fourth film after the Baahubali franchise and Rangasthalam to collect such excellent numbers there.

The overseas revenue of 2.0 has successfully leaped past the $17.5 million mark (Rs 127 crore) in 11 days, with the US and UAE-GCC contributing the lion's share of sales. It is currently the second highest grossing South Indian movie in offshore markets, only behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which amassed a mammoth total of $62 million after the completion of China theatrical run in June.

In the US, the film has successfully vaulted over the $5 million (Rs 36.27 crore) total in 11 days. It is the third Indian film after Sanju and Padmaavat to touch the $5 million milestone in the US this year. With 2.0, Rajinikanth has reiterated his box office supremacy stateside with the top five highest grossing Tamil films in the region (2.0, Kabali, Enthiran, Kaala and Lingaa) belonging to him. 2.0 is also the only non-Baahubali South Indian film to earn $5 million and more in the Western market. The UAE-GCC territory is the second best performing foreign market for 2.0, with close to a Rs 33 crore total from 10 days with a record 4 lakh audience admits. It has supplanted the earnings of Premam, Kabali and Kayamkulam Kochunni to become the third highest grossing South Indian film of all time after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Pulimurugan in the UAE-GCC belt.

In France, 2.0 has performed moderately with just 17,000 admissions from 11 days. Vijay-starrer Mersal still tops the all time top 10 France admissions list for south Indian films, with nearly 33,000 entries, followed by Enthiran at 30,000. With a good total of A$1,310,594 in Australia, 2.0 is currently the second top grossing South Indian film in the nation, only behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which earned A$4.35 million.

Rajinikanth has delivered another solid industry record with 2.0, which is currently the all time highest grossing Tamil film globally. Now, the top three performers of all time in Kollywood are Rajinikanth's 2.0, Kabali and Enthiran. He is the only actor to have delivered industry hits with various directors such as KS Ravikumar, P Vasu, Shankar, Pa Ranjith and Suresh Krishna to name a few.
