Thackeray Trailer: Nawazuddin Siddiqui Shines as the Shiv Sena Leader

Thackeray Trailer: Nawazuddin Siddiqui Shines as the Shiv Sena Leader

Thackeray, directed by Abhijit Panse, has been scripted by senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, who is also producing the project. Amrita Rao is play Bal Thackeray's wife Meenatai Thackeray. The film will release on January 25.

The trailer expands on the teaser that was revealed earlier, opening with scenes from a riot. It charts the rise of one man to become an all-powerful controversial leader with immense control and influence over Maharashtra. The trailer also shows scenes from a courtroom, where Thackeray is being questioned on the Babri Masjid demolition.

Nawaz had tweeted a few hours before the trailer was revealed, “Few more hours of wait for the trailer of the toughest role I have done ever #Thackeray.”

Hours before the launch of its trailer, the biopic ran into censor trouble. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has objected to three dialogues in the film – of which two are related to Thackeray's reference to South Indians and Babri Masjid.

Raut decided to not let that hitch affect the trailer launch. "We are in the process of complying with the Censor Board's instructions. This will not affect the trailer launch," Raut said, adding, "Balasaheb's statements had always been controversial. His style of speaking was such."

Earlier, talking about his role, Nawaz had said, "One of the important aspects of Balasaheb's character was the ease and the speed of his public speeches. It is important for me to get this ease and speed."

The first teaser of the film was released almost a year ago and the second teaser was released last month. The movie is slated for a January 2019 release. In the build-up to the trailer launch, the makers had released a special video, a couple of days back, remembering Balasaheb.

When the teaser of Thackeray was launched, Shiv Sena president and Bal Thackeray's son Uddhav Thackeray was all praise for the film. "It's not an easy task to portray Balasaheb on screen... It's not a hero-heroine film... It's a film on a person who made common man a hero," he had said.
