Violence mars 7th phase polling in West Bengal; BJP delegation to meet EC over booth capturing allegations

Continuing the streak of violence in West Bengal during polling, reports of clashes between the BJP and TMC workers have come in from state's Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency and several polling stations of Basirhat seat.

While the left is alleging EVM rigging, the BJP is contending booth capturing by TMC goons at several polling stations in the constituency. The BJP has also levelled a serious charge against the TMC saying that TMC goons have been intimidating the BJP workers throughout the election. "Fearing the loss of seats, TMC jihadi brigade has been threatening saffron party workers in almost all the constituencies that go to polls," a BJP spokesperson said.

North Kolkata's BJP candidate Rahul Sinha was allegedly attacked by TMC goons. "A BJP worker and a cameraman was injured when they tried to attack me," he said. Further, an explosion was heard from a polling station in Islampur where a by-election is being held for the assembly.

Here are some of the violence incidents being reported from West Bengal

*BJP's Diamond Harbour candidate Nilanjan Roy's car vandalised in  Dongaria area of the constituency. He is up against Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee

Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of party chief Mamata Banerjee, who is seeking re-election from Diamond Harbour has sent a defamation notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making "wildly fabricated allegations" against him during a rally in the constituency.

PM Modi had said that the state was being tortured by the bua-bhatija - an apparent reference to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

The defamation notice, written by Abhishek Banerjee's advocate on his behalf, claimed that the speech was aimed at harming his reputation.

West Bengal has witnessed violence in all the previous six phases of polling. In the sixth phase, a vehicle belonging to BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh was vandalised and she was herself heckled allegedly by TMC women workers.

In Bankura district, clashes broke out between workers of the BJP and Trinamool Congress. BJP state chief Dilip Ghosh accused Trinamool Congress workers of attacking him at a booth in Rampura.

Due to the violence in the state, Election Commission curtailed the campaigning time for the seventh phase by invoking the Constitution's Article 324.
