Fresh faceoff over West Bengal Governor’s security; Mamata govt writes to MHA, asks why it wasn’t consulted

Fresh faceoff over West Bengal Governor’s security; Mamata govt writes to MHA, asks why it wasn’t consulted

A fresh row has erupted between the Union government and the Mamata Banerjee government over central security provided to West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar. The state government has written to the Centre asking why is the Governor being provided with central security.

In a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Trinamool Congress government also asked why did the Centre not consult it before deciding on the move.

It may be noted that the MHA had announced its decision to entrust the Governor’s security to the Central Reserve Police Force, taking it away from the West Bengal Police. Governor Dhankar will be getting ‘Z’ security.

"It is the responsibility of the state government to look after the security of the Governor since he is the constitutional head of the state.

"The state government has provided him with ‘Z’ category security since the first day of his appointment. Then, why did the MHA suddenly decide to entrust his security with the CRPF without consulting us," a senior West Bengal state Secretariat official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The official asserted that the security arrangements made by the state government for the Governor are foolproof . The government, in the letter, has asked the MHA to rethink its decision.

The MHA had issued the order on the security of Dhankhar, who became Governor on July 30, on October 15. The CRPF has been asked to take over Dhankhar's security, which will be valid in all parts of India. It has, however, yet to take charge.

Meetings have been held between West Bengal police officers and the CRPF brass for the new security design but the same did not yield any results. This is the reason why the Governor’s security is still with the state police.

Earlier, sources at the Governor's office had stated that the state government had been asked to upgrade the Governor's security from Z to Z+ category in view of the September incident at the Jadavpur University campus wherein his vehicle was blocked by students. The Governor had gone to the university to 'rescue' Union Minister Babul Supriyo.
