Student Of DAV School Of Business Management Ends Life In Hostel, Parents Allege Harassment

Bhubaneshwar: A second-year undergraduate student at city-based DAV School of Business Management allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on Monday night, prompting her parents to allege harassment at the hands of fellow inmates.

Tanya Banerjee, a B. Com student, was found hanging in her room early on Tuesday.

Her father Trilok Banerjee, an employee with Mahandi Coalfields Ltd at Angul, said Tanya had called her mother last night and was complaining of harassment by some senior as well as junior students.

Tanya was being targeted for theft of cosmetic items which had left her depressed and scared. Some of the fellow inmates forced her to sleep alone in her room on Monday night, he said.

The parents also blamed the hostel warden for being negligent and not resolving the issue which led to this incident.

Banerjee demanded that the role of the fellow inmates who had harassed her must be probed.

The principal of the college, Dr BN Mishra, said the matter came to light early in the morning when the hostel superintendent was apprised of the matter. “We immediately informed the police and the matter is being investigated into,” Mishra added.

The student’s body was taken to Capital Hospital for post-mortem.
