Mumbai police deny permission to Jignesh and Khalid event, book the duo

Mumbai: A day after a state-wide bandh was held protesting the violence against Dalits at an event to commemorate the Battle of Koregaon in Pune, Mumbai police have denied permission for an event where Gujarat dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid were scheduled to speak.

Meanwhile, FIRs have been registered against Jignesh Mevani and Umar Khalid under section 153(A), 505 & 117 at Vishrambaug Police Station in Pune.

The police have forcibly removed students gathered for the Chhatra Bharati event outside Bhaidas Hall.

"Had booked Bhaidas Hall for All India National Students' Summit in Mumbai today, but now we are being denied entry. The reason the police is citing is the news doing the rounds about Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani for the past few days," Sagar Bhalerao, VP of Chhatra Bharati and the organiser for the event told the news agency ANI.

He added that Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani have been invited to the event and that it had been finalised earlier.
