Imran Khan to 'take oath as Pakistan PM on August 11' not August 14

Imran Khan to 'take oath as Pakistan PM on August 11' not August 14

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan will take oath as Pakistan's Prime Minister on August 11, a media report said on Monday. Albeit the PTI had emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly (NA) after the Pakistan General Elections were held on July 25, the party does not have enough numbers to form the government on its own.

On Sunday, the PTI had declared that it was making all efforts to approach independents as well as smaller parties in a bid to form the next government. Radio Pakistan quoted the 65-year-old Khan as saying that he would take oath as Pakistan Prime Minister on 11th of next month, i.e. August.

While addressing PTI leaders, Khan said he has also taken a decision regarding who would be the next chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He will announce the name in the next 48 hours. “Whatever I have decided in this regard is in the best interest of people," he said.

Talking about the priorities of his government, Khan tagged poverty alleviation from interior Sindh as one of the top ones. On Saturday, PTI spokesman Naeemul Haque had told the media that Khan’s swearing-in ceremony would take place before August 14.

He had expressed hope that the president would convene an Assembly session and Khan would take oath as PM before Pakistan’s Independence Day.

As per the final results issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI has won 116 seats, 22 short of simple majority. 137 seats were required for any party to win a simple majority.

The PML-N and PPP have bagged 64 and 43 seats, respectively. The PTI is now trying to encourage independents to join it so that it can reach the magic number.

Besides independents, the PTI has been reaching out to parties like Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and PML-Quaid (PML-Q).
